(yes I double booked myself on this one…saw half of both then caught up with each of the panelists after! Divinia Knowles from Mind Bites is super awesome. She’s doing some amazing things with Mind Bites and really has a great viewpoint on how games can be used to educate youth effectively and more successfully than traditional menthods. After talking with her I was inspired to build my very own Moshi Monster!)

After that, I met up with the Fabulous Megan Gaiser from Her Interactive in New York-one of the panelists on our panel and we talked about girls, gaming, and the video game industry.

Then, I checked out the Lego corner which was jam packed with some amazing creations, including a tribute to the recent Austin Zombie road signs that have been popping up around Austin.

It was great meeting folks in the Austin community who are passionate about contributing their time and talents to Girlstart-you are truly the folks that make all the difference! Tuesday March 17^th

Today was yet another great day at SXSWi-I met a lot of folks in the non-profit industry and we exchanged information to share resources. The Austin non-profit tech folks are wonderful about sharing what they know with each other-it’s such a caring community.

The highlight of my day was definitely getting an autographed copy of Chris Anderson’s book “The Long Tail”-thanks to my amazing and fabulous sister who managed to grab the last copy remaining-the display, and begging Chris Anderson to sign it for me. Yay!

I also attended:

but spent most of the day checking out the Film festival portion of SXSWi…there was a documentary about the pets of Hurricane Katrina and the folks involved brought loads of dogs and set up an area outside the convention center promoting the documentary. Of course I had to spend a lot of time here.

When the conference came to an end, I couldn’t beleive how quickly it had flown by. This is always the case with SXSW Interactive and while I felt sad (nerd alert!) I had so many new friends and so much new knowledge that I had to celebrate. I’ve got loads of scribbles I have yet to decipher and lots of things to look up on my To Learn list-I think by the time I get through that list, it’ll be time for SXSWi 2010.

I know I’m behind on my SXSWi blog posts (I’m still getting all my notes and thoughts together…that’s what this upcoming weekend/week is being reserved for) so I thought I’d distract you with something shiny. Not very often does a blog so utterly genius come along that I bow my head down in complete respect. Anna the Red’s chronicling of the lunches she makes her boyfriend are art at its most edible and her genius in incorporating her tech geekiness into her designs just makes her number 1 on my list of real life people I’d most like to be pals with. This is so awesome and I completely forgot to post about it when it first came out…but here.

Ok so further perpetuating the stereotype that women love to shop, here are my picks for what I want NOW.

This fantabulously fun alarm clock only shuts up when you insert the 3 shapes into the correct slots.

Not sure I WANT this but it is crazy….french company DUENDE is making these scientific necklaces…by that I mean…scientists just figured out how to convert milk into plastic (something about the casien in it, ew ew ew) and the jewelry house is creating some sort of artistic showcase of mothers and babies (and the milk between them). Part of the showcase includes a jewelry line. crazy, but i can’t help but say…cool.

What???? Really??? Yeah, really. Mortal Kombat co-creator announced recently that the next installment of MK will feature…you got it….Batman and Spiderman.

Okay, I’m sorry. But I’m defn. one of the idiots that got suckered in by this magnificent brilliance in music:

It’s true. My myspace even featured their techno remix. But I digress. Now, Subway has made 5 dollar foot-longs part of their menu! That’s right!! It’s not longer “for a limited time only!!” This is excellent news. For who I’m not sure, but its c-c-c-catching on.

Basically, it talks about the development of “victimless meat”- beef, chicken, pork etc. grown from stem cells. We’re not talking fake here obviously, this is real meat, but unlike today, In Vitro (or In Meatro, as the author says, har har) will never have been attached to a leaving, breathing animal, and will be wholly created in a lab. This means it will be much more environmentally friendly by not using scarce resources (I believe it currently takes 5 lbs of grain to produce 1 lb of meat) and not producing waste that harms the environment. Supposedly, scientists will also be able to manufacture it without using hormones, steroids, etc. and will be able to trim the bad fats out, making meat actually healthy.

Apparently, scientists feel that humans will never give up eating meat and that this is the best way-a sort of compromise. I don’t know…there was a time in life that I ate meat at every meal and laughed at hippy vegetarians, swearing I’d never be one, but I have been now for about 4 years (recently even went vegan) and I must say, it rules.

Anyways, apparently, PETA is behind this (I don’t understand PETA lately, they seem to be going bonkers, first, one higher up publicly states she eats at BBQ restaurants all the time and now they start contributing $$ to this? Weirdos.)

Seriously, people just need to discover Tofurkey and those amazing vegan meatballs at Whole Foods. No one would ever eat meat again!
